Move Safe Move Well – Parkinson's Disease Program

Exercise for Parkinson's Disease

Regular exercise has been proven to help manage Parkinson's disease symptoms through a process known as neuroplasticity. Neuroplasticity is essentially the brain rewiring itself through the growth and adaptation of neural connections. The growth of these neural connections can enhance motor function and improve movement efficiency.

How can exercise physiology assist a person living with Parkinson's Disease?

Exercise Physiologists are four year university trained allied health professionals. With our deep understanding of human physiology, we are specialists when it comes to working with people with chronic disease. As we know, Parkinson's Disease is life long, but symptoms can be managed with exercise.

Benefits of regular exercise physiology sessions include:

  • Improved gait and dynamic balance
  • Improved static balance and reduction in falls
  • Improved sleep quality and reduction in fatigue
  • Reduction in freezing of gait
  • Improved quality of life

Our Program

We offer a specialist Parkinson's group exercise class, weekly. Class numbers are kept small, to ensure we can tailor exercise to each individual, as needed. We run this class in a circuit style, rotating around different stations. Exercises are then modified throughout the class based on individual needs and abilities.

To ensure that you are safe to exercise and we are able to make the most of the group class, we require you to undertake an initial assessment, where we obtain a thorough medical history and conduct physical assessments to determine your baseline fitness. To get started, click the link below
